What is Scribing?
Scribing is a technique used to create a stress line in a material, such as glass or semiconductor wafers, where a controlled crack can be initiated to facilitate precise separation of the material along the scribed line.
Scribing Process Details
- Material Selection: The material to be scribed is chosen based on its intended use and the required properties for its application.
- Tool Selection: A scribing tool, typically with a diamond or hard metal tip, is chosen that can effectively produce a fine scratch or line on the material without causing uncontrolled cracking.
- Marking Initial Line: The material surface is marked, often with a ruler or template, to guide the scribing tool and ensure the scribe line is straight and positioned accurately.
- Applying Pressure: The scribing tool is pressed against the material surface with controlled force to create a shallow groove or scratch along the marked line. The process must be executed with even pressure to form a continuous line that will guide the crack propagation.
- Initiating the Crack: A mechanical force, thermal shock, or other controlled method is applied to the material along the scribed line to initiate a crack that will propagate through the material, often referred to as breaking or snapping.
