What is a Shortpass Filter

A shortpass filter is an optical filter that allows light with a wavelength shorter than the cutoff wavelength to pass through, while blocking longer wavelengths. Shortpass filters are used in a variety of applications, such as laser protection, photometry, and spectroscopy. Some features of shortpass filters are:

  • They have a steep cut-off slope that defines the transition between high transmission and high rejection regions.
  • They have a high optical density (OD) that measures the light blocking ability of the filter.
  • They have a high transmission in the passband region that is close to 100%.
  • They can be combined with longpass filters to create custom bandpass filters.

Some major specifications of shortpass filters are:

  • Cut-off wavelength: This is the wavelength at which the filter achieves 50% of the maximum transmission. It determines the upper limit of the passband region and the lower limit of the blocking region.
  • Transmission range: This is the wavelength range over which the filter transmits light with high efficiency. It is usually specified by the minimum and maximum wavelengths of the passband region.
  • Blocking range: This is the wavelength range over which the filter blocks light with high attenuation. It is usually specified by the minimum and maximum wavelengths of the rejection region.
  • Slope: This is the bandwidth over which the filter transitions from high transmission to high blocking. It is usually expressed as a percentage of the cut-off wavelength. A smaller slope corresponds to a sharper transition and a narrower transition region.
  • Optical density: This is a measure of light blocking ability of the filter, considering all forms of attenuation. It is usually expressed as a logarithmic scale, where OD = -log(T), where T is the transmittance. A higher OD means a lower transmittance and a higher attenuation.

Use Cases for Shortpass Filters

  • For laser protection, shortpass filters are often used to block harmful laser radiation and pass only safe visible light. The cut-off wavelength of these filters should match or be lower than the wavelength of the laser. For example, if the laser has a wavelength of 1064 nm, a shortpass filter with a cut-off wavelength of 1050 nm or lower can be used.
  • For photometry, shortpass filters are often used to measure light intensity or brightness of a source or an object. By passing only one color or color range through the source or object, the luminance or radiance of that color can be measured by a photodetector. For example, if the source or object has a peak emission at 650 nm, a shortpass filter with a cut-off wavelength of 660 nm or lower can be used to pass only red light through it. The photodetector can then measure how much red light is emitted by the source or object.
  • For spectroscopy, shortpass filters are often used to isolate specific spectral lines or bands from a broad spectrum source. By passing only shorter wavelengths through the source, longer wavelengths that may interfere with the analysis can be blocked. For example, if the source contains a spectral line at 589 nm, a shortpass filter with a cut-off wavelength of 590 nm or lower can be used to pass only yellow light through it. The spectrometer can then measure how much yellow light is absorbed or emitted by the sample.
