To human eyes, silicon looks like solid, shiny metal. However, to SWIR light (beyond 1100nm), silicon is completely transparent, like glass. This filter is placed on a special SWIR camera to let inspectors look "inside" or "through" silicon microchips to find hidden microscopic cracks or defects. The filter blocks all the regular, distracting room light from the factory floor.

Recommended light source:

  • Halogen light source: Halogen bulbs naturally output a massive amount of broadband SWIR light, making them a very cost-effective way to shine a bright light straight through thick silicon materials.
  • 1200nm or 1300nm SWIR LEDs: LEDs create much less heat than halogen bulbs and last significantly longer. This is a major advantage when illuminating delicate, heat-sensitive electronic components from up close.

Modern telecommunications and advanced laser-radar (LiDAR) used in self-driving cars heavily use the 1310nm and 1550nm light bands. These wavelengths travel well through fog and are considered "eye-safe." This filter is put on the receiver/sensor to act like heavy-duty sunglasses—it blocks out all the sunlight and headlights (visible/NIR light) so the sensor is only triggered by the specific laser signal it is looking for.

Recommended light source:

  • 1550nm Telecom Lasers: This is the absolute industry standard for long-distance communication and outdoor LiDAR. It falls directly in the "sweet spot" of your filter's highest transmission zone, ensuring maximum signal strength.
  • 1310nm Lasers or SLDs (Superluminescent Diodes): Commonly used for shorter-range communication networks or fiber-optic testing. It perfectly aligns with the filter's clear window and offers cheaper component costs than 1550nm systems.
