Digital camera sensors (like those in smartphones or security cameras) are highly sensitive to the 400-1100nm range. Engineers use these filters to test how a sensor performs in low light or to prevent the sensor from getting overwhelmed and "blinded" during lab testing. The filter dims the light predictably without changing its color.

Recommended light source:

  • Tunable LED light sources: They allow testers to easily dial in specific colors across the visible and near-infrared spectrum to see how the sensor reacts.
  • Tungsten-Halogen lamps: They provide a very smooth, continuous, and natural spectrum of light from visible all the way deep into the near-infrared, making them perfect for mimicking real-world sunlight in a lab.

Because it is "absorptive," it safely eats the light rather than acting like a mirror and reflecting a dangerous beam back into the room or into the laser itself.

Recommended light source:

  • Low-power Diode Lasers (e.g., 632nm or 1064nm): These are incredibly common in labs for alignment; they fall perfectly within the filter's 400-1100nm working range and don't produce enough heat to crack the glass.
  • Helium-Neon (HeNe) lasers: These are the standard, steady red lasers used for optical bench alignments that often need gentle, predictable dimming.
