A Shortpass Dichroic Mirror (SPDM590) is a highly specialized optical tool that acts like a color-sorting traffic cop for light. "Shortpass" means it allows "shorter" light wavelengths—specifically cyan, green, and yellow light (480-580nm)—to pass straight through it like a clear glass window (transmitting over 90% of it). At the same time, it acts as a perfect mirror for "longer" wavelengths, bouncing back red and near-infrared light (600-1100nm) with over 99% efficiency. The "590" indicates the transition point: right around 590 nanometers (orange light), the filter stops acting like a window and starts acting like a mirror.

Application - Laser Beam Combining or Splitting

In complex optical systems, engineers often need to mix two completely different colored laser beams into a single, perfectly aligned path (or do the reverse and split a mixed beam). Because this mirror is virtually transparent to green/yellow light but highly reflective to red/infrared light, it can seamlessly merge a green laser beam with an infrared laser beam without losing the power or intensity of either one.

Recommended light source:

  • 532nm Green DPSS Laser: This is a very common, stable laser used in research and industry. Its advantage is that its wavelength falls perfectly into the mirror's "pass-through" window (480-580nm), meaning the light travels through the glass with almost zero energy loss.
  • 1064nm Nd:YAG Infrared Laser (or 633nm Red HeNe Laser): These are standard industrial and scientific lasers. Their advantage is that they fall perfectly into the mirror's "reflection" zone (600-1100nm). When angled correctly, this light bounces off the mirror perfectly to join the path of the green laser.

Application - Live-Cell Imaging and Optogenetics

Biologists use light to control cell behavior (a field called optogenetics) while recording video of the cells. The SPDM590 allows researchers to shine stimulating green or yellow light directly through the mirror onto the cells. At the same time, harmless near-infrared light is used to illuminate the scene; this infrared light bounces off the cells, hits the dichroic mirror, and is reflected straight into a sensitive observation camera without the two signals interfering with one another.

Recommended light source:

  • 561nm Yellow-Green LED or Laser: The advantage here is that this specific wavelength is highly effective at activating certain biological proteins, and it easily passes through the SPDM590's transmission window without being blocked.
  • 850nm Near-Infrared LED: The advantage of near-infrared light is that it is totally invisible and harmless to living cells, meaning it won't disturb their natural behavior. It also falls perfectly into the mirror's high-reflection zone, guaranteeing a bright, high-contrast image for the recording camera.
