What is a NdYAG Mirror?

A NdYAG mirror is a type of optical mirror that is designed to reflect light at the wavelengths of a Nd:YAG laser, which is a solid-state laser that uses neodymium-doped yttrium aluminum garnet (Nd:Y3Al5O12) as the gain medium. Nd:YAG lasers can operate at different harmonic frequencies, such as 1064 nm (fundamental), 532 nm (second harmonic), 355 nm (third harmonic) and 266 nm (fourth harmonic). NdYAG mirrors are used to form the laser cavity, which is the optical resonator that amplifies the laser light and determines the output characteristics of the laser.

Major Specifications of NdYAG Mirrors

  • Design wavelength: The wavelength or range of wavelengths that the mirror is optimized for. NdYAG mirrors can be designed for a single wavelength or multiple wavelengths, depending on the application.
  • Reflectance: The percentage of light that is reflected by the mirror at the design wavelength. NdYAG mirrors typically have high reflectance (>99%) to minimize the loss of laser power in the cavity.
  • Damage threshold: The maximum intensity or fluence of light that the mirror can withstand without being damaged. NdYAG mirrors have high damage thresholds to endure the high-energy pulses of Nd:YAG lasers.
  • Surface quality: The degree of smoothness and defect-free condition of the mirror surface. NdYAG mirrors have high surface quality (10-5 scratch-dig or better) to reduce scattering and aberrations in the laser beam.
  • Surface flatness: The deviation of the mirror surface from a perfect plane. NdYAG mirrors have high surface flatness (λ/10 or better) to maintain the wavefront quality of the laser beam.
  • Substrate material: The type of glass or crystal that forms the base of the mirror. NdYAG mirrors usually use fused silica or N-BK7 as substrate materials, as they have low thermal expansion and high optical homogeneity.

Coatings for NdYAG Mirrors

The coatings for NdYAG mirrors are thin layers of dielectric materials that are deposited on the substrate surface to create interference effects that enhance or suppress reflection at certain wavelengths. The coatings can be designed to achieve different performance goals, such as:

  • Single wavelength coating: A coating that reflects only one wavelength (e.g., 1064 nm) and transmits all others. This can be used to form a monochromatic laser cavity or to isolate a specific harmonic frequency from a multi-wavelength laser output.
  • Dual wavelength coating: A coating that reflects two wavelengths (e.g., 532 nm and 1064 nm) and transmits all others. This can be used to form a dual-wavelength laser cavity or to combine or separate two harmonic frequencies from a multi-wavelength laser output.
  • Multi-wavelength coating: A coating that reflects multiple wavelengths (e.g., 266 nm, 355 nm, 532 nm and 1064 nm) and transmits all others. This can be used to form a multi-wavelength laser cavity or to manipulate multiple harmonic frequencies from a multi-wavelength laser output.

The coatings for NdYAG mirrors are usually made of alternating layers of high and low refractive index materials, such as SiO2, Ta2O5, HfO2, ZrO2, etc. The number, thickness and order of the layers determine the spectral characteristics of the coating. The coatings are applied using physical vapor deposition (PVD) techniques, such as electron beam evaporation or ion beam sputtering.

Use Examples of NdYAG Mirrors in Different Laser Systems

NdYAG mirrors can be used in different types of laser systems that employ Nd:YAG lasers as light sources, such as:

  • Q-switched lasers: Lasers that use a modulator (e.g., an acousto-optic or electro-optic device) to control the timing and duration of the laser pulses. Q-switched lasers can produce high peak power and short pulse width, which are useful for applications such as material processing, marking, engraving, etc. NdYAG mirrors can be used to form the Q-switched laser cavity and to reflect the desired harmonic frequency.
  • Mode-locked lasers: Lasers that use a modulator (e.g., a saturable absorber or an active feedback loop) to synchronize the phases of multiple longitudinal modes in the laser cavity. Mode-locked lasers can produce ultrashort pulses with high repetition rate, which are useful for applications such as spectroscopy, microscopy, metrology, etc. NdYAG mirrors can be used to form the mode-locked laser cavity and to reflect the desired harmonic frequency.
  • Frequency-doubled lasers: Lasers that use a nonlinear crystal (e.g., KTP, LBO, BBO, etc.) to convert the fundamental wavelength (e.g., 1064 nm) to the second harmonic wavelength (e.g., 532 nm) by exploiting the second-order nonlinear susceptibility of the crystal. Frequency-doubled lasers can produce green light, which is useful for applications such as laser display, medical treatment, holography, etc. NdYAG mirrors can be used to form the frequency-doubled laser cavity and to reflect the fundamental and second harmonic wavelengths.
  • Frequency-tripled lasers: Lasers that use two nonlinear crystals (e.g., KTP and BBO) to convert the fundamental wavelength (e.g., 1064 nm) to the third harmonic wavelength (e.g., 355 nm) by exploiting the second-order nonlinear susceptibility of the crystals. Frequency-tripled lasers can produce ultraviolet light, which is useful for applications such as lithography, fluorescence, sterilization, etc. NdYAG mirrors can be used to form the frequency-tripled laser cavity and to reflect the fundamental, second and third harmonic wavelengths.
  • Frequency-quadrupled lasers: Lasers that use three nonlinear crystals (e.g., KTP, BBO and CLBO) to convert the fundamental wavelength (e.g., 1064 nm) to the fourth harmonic wavelength (e.g., 266 nm) by exploiting the second-order nonlinear susceptibility of the crystals. Frequency-quadrupled lasers can produce deep ultraviolet light, which is useful for applications such as semiconductor inspection, DNA sequencing, laser cooling, etc. NdYAG mirrors can be used to form the frequency-quadrupled laser cavity and to reflect the fundamental, second, third and fourth harmonic wavelengths.
