193nm (Argon-Fluoride Excimer):

• Real Case: This is the industry standard for Microchip Lithography. It is used by companies like ASML to "carve" the tiny circuits onto modern computer processors. Because 193nm is so small, it can create features much thinner than a human hair.

248nm (Krypton-Fluoride Excimer):

• Real Case: Used for older generations of microchips and LASIK eye surgery. The energy is high enough to vaporize ultra-thin layers of the cornea without heating or damaging the surrounding tissue.

These lamps use an electric arc through mercury gas. They don't just produce one wavelength; they have "spikes" of light at specific points.

254nm (Low-Pressure Mercury):

• Real Case: Germicidal Lamps (UV-C). You will see these in hospitals or water treatment plants. This specific wavelength is perfect for breaking the DNA of bacteria and viruses, effectively "killing" them so they can't reproduce.

365nm (High-Pressure Mercury "i-line"):

• Real Case: UV Curing. In factories, this light is used to instantly dry (cure) specialized inks on soda cans or adhesives in medical devices.

LEDs are becoming more popular because they don't contain toxic mercury and last a long time. They usually emit a narrow "envelope" of light around one peak.

• 280nm (Deep UV LED):Real Case: Portable Water Purifiers. Small, battery-powered sticks used by hikers to disinfect water in a bottle.
• 365nm (Long-wave UV LED):Real Case: Forensics and Counterfeit Detection. This is the standard "Blacklight." Police use them to find bodily fluids at crime scenes, and banks use them to see the glowing security strips on $100 bills.
• 395nm (Near-Visible LED):Real Case: Party Lights and Scorpion Hunting. This is very close to visible purple light. It’s cheaper to make and is used in UV flashlights to make scorpions glow in the desert or for "glow-in-the-dark" mini-golf.
