Germicidal / Sterilization Monitoring

• DNA Inactivation: The peak absorption of DNA and RNA is approximately 260–265 nm. This filter is used in radiometers and detectors to monitor the output of sterilization equipment to ensure the light source is delivering the correct germicidal wavelength to effectively neutralize bacteria and viruses (including SARS-CoV-2).

Recommended Light Sources

• UV-C LED (265 nm): Precisely matches the peak DNA/RNA absorption wavelength (265 nm) for maximum germicidal efficiency, while offering a compact, mercury-free solution that aligns perfectly with the BP265 filter's transmission band.

Solar-Blind Imaging

• The atmosphere absorbs nearly all solar radiation below 280 nm. A 265 nm filter allows detectors to see "in the dark" relative to the sun. This is used in high-voltage corona detection (spotting electrical arcs on power lines in broad daylight) and missile plume detection, as these events emit UV-C light that stands out against the solar-blind background.

Recommended Light Source

• Corona Discharge / Electrical Arc (Intrinsic Source): The ionization of atmospheric nitrogen during a high-voltage discharge naturally emits strong UV-C light (specifically in the 230–280 nm range). Because the sun's radiation in this band is absorbed by the atmosphere, the arc becomes the only bright source visible through the 265 nm filter, allowing for high-contrast detection of faults even in bright daylight.
• Missile Plume / Exhaust (Intrinsic Source): The high-temperature combustion in rocket exhaust generates UV-C emissions. Using the atmosphere as a natural "solar blind," the 265 nm filter isolates this emission, enabling early warning systems to detect threats against a pitch-black background, reducing false alarms from sunlight or ground reflections.
