CPL is useful when you have polarization sensitive component in your setup for example beamsplitters, prism etc. If you use a standard PL, the linearly polarized light entering the prism/splitter may be blocked or transmitted unevenly depending on its angle (s-pol vs. p-pol). This causes blackouts, color shifts, or metering errors.
