Subcutaneous Vein Viewing (Medical Imaging)

Human skin and tissue scatter and block most visible light, making it hard to see beneath the surface. However, near-infrared (NIR) light penetrates tissue much deeper. Furthermore, the hemoglobin in our blood naturally absorbs this NIR light. When medical staff shine an NIR light on a patient's arm and look through a camera equipped with an LP700 filter (which entirely blocks the bright, distracting hospital room lights), the surrounding tissue reflects the light while the veins absorb it. This makes the veins show up as highly visible dark lines, helping nurses easily locate them for blood draws or IVs.

Recommended light source:

• 850nm LED Arrays: This wavelength penetrates human tissue beautifully and provides excellent contrast against the blood. It safely passes right through the LP700 filter and is a standard, highly reliable choice for medical imaging devices.
• 740nm or 760nm LEDs: Blood absorbs light incredibly well right at these specific wavelengths. While this light doesn't penetrate as deeply into the arm as 850nm, it provides the absolute sharpest, darkest visual contrast for veins closer to the skin's surface.

Agricultural Crop Monitoring (Vegetation Health)

Healthy plants absorb visible red and blue light to perform photosynthesis, but they act like mirrors for invisible NIR light, reflecting it heavily to avoid overheating. Sick, dehydrated, or diseased plants lose this cellular structure and reflect much less NIR light. By mounting a camera with an LP700 filter onto a drone, farmers can block out normal visible sunlight and only capture the bouncing NIR light. This creates a high-contrast map of the field, instantly highlighting unhealthy crops before any yellowing or wilting is visible to the naked human eye.

Recommended light source:

• The Sun (Natural Sunlight): For outdoor drone surveys, the sun is the ultimate, free light source. It produces massive amounts of broad-spectrum infrared light that blankets the entire field, allowing the filtered camera to easily read the reflections from the plants.
• Broadband Halogen Lamps: If the crop inspection is happening indoors (such as sorting freshly harvested apples on a factory conveyor belt or checking automated greenhouse plants), halogen lamps are a cheap, powerful way to artificially blast the crops with the necessary infrared light.
