Laser Beam Profiling and Diagnostics

When engineers need to examine the exact shape, size, and quality of a laser beam using a digital camera, the raw laser is usually way too bright and will instantly blind or fry the camera's sensor. An absorptive ND filter acts like heavy-duty sunglasses, dimming the beam just enough so the camera can safely capture a clear, detailed picture of the light profile.

Recommended light source:

• Nd:YAG Lasers (1064nm): These are very common lasers that fall perfectly into the filter's 400-1100nm working range. An ND filter allows for the safe alignment and measurement of low-power Nd:YAG beams.
• Visible Laser Diodes (e.g., 632nm): The filter reduces the intense central glare of the diode so the exact shape of the laser spot can be analyzed without oversaturating the camera.

Machine Vision and Factory Inspection

Automated cameras on factory assembly lines inspect products as they quickly move by. These systems need intense lighting to freeze the motion, but highly reflective parts (like shiny metal or glass) can cause bright glares that blind the camera. An ND filter cuts down the overall light intensity so the camera captures a perfectly balanced, glare-free image of the part.

Recommended light source:

• High-Intensity Halogen Lamps: These provide excellent, continuous lighting for automated cameras. An ND filter can easily dim their intense output without shifting their color temperature, keeping the inspection consistent.
• LED Ring Lights: Ring lights are great for even illumination but can create bright "hotspots" on shiny objects. An ND filter helps bring the overall brightness down to a level the camera sensor can process clearly.
