    Machine Vision & Surveillance

    • Night Vision Imaging: 1064 nm is invisible to the human eye. Systems using this wavelength can illuminate a scene for a camera without disturbing human observers.
    • Defect Inspection: Used to inspect silicon wafers or semiconductor materials (silicon is transparent to infrared light >1100 nm, but 1064 nm interacts with the material, making it useful for surface inspection or seeing through certain plastic packaging).

    Recommended Light Sources

    • High-Power 1064 nm LEDs

    1. For Night Vision Imaging (Surveillance)Description: Arrays of high-power 1064 nm LEDs are used as "floodlights" or "illuminators."

Why it works: Unlike lasers, LEDs emit non-coherent light, providing smooth, wide-angle illumination that covers the entire field of view of the camera without creating visual noise (speckle). This allows for clear, high-contrast images of the scene while remaining completely invisible to the human eye.

    2. For Defect Inspection (Machine Vision)

Description: LED fixtures formed into specific shapes, such as Ring Lights, Bar Lights, or Dome Lights.

Why it works:Silicon Inspection: At 1064 nm, silicon is partially transparent but still absorptive enough to create contrast. LED backlights can be used to see through silicon wafers to find internal cracks (using the transparency), or LED ring lights can be used to inspect the surface (using the absorption).

Plastic Packaging: Many plastics that are opaque in visible light are transparent at 1064 nm. An LED illuminator can shine through the plastic packaging to inspect the semiconductor product inside without opening the package.

    Biomedical Instrumentation

    • Used in therapeutic laser systems (e.g., dermatology) to ensure only the therapeutic wavelength reaches the patient.
    • Raman Spectroscopy: Used to clean the excitation source or filter the collection path in systems using 1064 nm excitation to avoid fluorescence interference.

    Recommended Light Sources

For Therapeutic Laser Systems (Dermatology): Nd:YAG Laser (Neodymium-doped Yttrium Aluminum Garnet)

    • Type: Long-Pulsed or Q-Switched.
    • Description: The Nd:YAG laser is the gold standard for 1064 nm dermatological treatments. It is capable of generating the high-peak power required to thermally alter tissue.
    • Why it works:
    1. Deep Penetration: The 1064 nm wavelength penetrates deeper into the dermis than visible lasers (like 532 nm), allowing it to target deep-seated hair follicles, leg veins, and collagen.
    2. Safety for Darker Skin: Melanin absorption at 1064 nm is lower than at shorter wavelengths. This allows the laser to pass through the darker epidermis without damaging it, focusing energy on the target underneath.
    3. Filter Role: The BP1064-40 ensures that no pump light (flashlamp) or harmonic frequencies reach the patient, preventing accidental burns or side effects.

For Raman Spectroscopy: Narrow-Linewidth 1064 nm Diode or DPSS Laser

    • Type: Continuous Wave (CW), Single-Longitudinal Mode.
    • Description: Unlike the high-power flash lamps used in surgery, Raman requires a highly stabilized, "pure" single-frequency laser.
    • Why it works:
    1. Fluorescence Suppression: This is the primary reason for using 1064 nm. Many biological samples (tissue, cells) fluoresce strongly when hit with green (532 nm) or red (785 nm) light. This fluorescence usually swamps the weak Raman signal. 1064 nm photon energy is too low to excite this fluorescence, leaving a clean "fingerprint" spectrum of the sample.
    2. Filter Role: The BP1064-40 is critical here to "clean" the laser source. Even a good laser emits "sidebands" or "spontaneous emission." If these aren't filtered out before the light hits the sample, they will appear as false peaks in the data.

Different Types of Filter Mountings

Unmounted:

  • a bare glass optical filter

Mounted:

  • Smooth Mount for protection of the optics. No thread is there on the mount.

Metric Mount:

  • Start with M as prefix, usually seens as M25.5x0.5mm. Mostly used as camera filters

Imperial Mount:

  • Start with SM as prefix, usually seen SM1, SM05 etc... Mostly used in Optical system. (You will have a SM external thread to connecting to other objects)

C-Mount:

  • Very frequently used mounting. C-Mount is 1‘’-32TPI. And it is not the same thing as SM1, or M25.5x0.5mm.
