BP460-20 Bandpass Filter - Fluorescence Microscopy
Fluorescence Microscopy
Given the high transmission and deep blocking (OD5), this filter is most likely designed for fluorescence imaging. It can serve two distinct roles depending on the fluorophore:
Role 1: Emission Filter (for Blue-Emitting Dyes)It isolates the blue fluorescence emitted by dyes excited by UV light.
Target Fluorophores:
- DAPI: (Peak emission ~461 nm) - This filter is a perfect match to capture the peak emission of DAPI while blocking excitation UV light.
- Hoechst 33342 / 33258: (Peak emission ~461 nm) - Commonly used for nuclear staining in live or fixed cells.
- Alexa Fluor 350 / AMCA: (Emission tail) - Captures the longer wavelength emission of these UV-excited blue dyes.
- Coumarin / 7-AMC: Dyes often used in assays that fluoresce in the blue region.
Role 2: Excitation Filter (for Green/Cyan Dyes)It filters a broadband light source to produce pure blue light (460 nm) to excite fluorophores that emit in the green/yellow spectrum.
Target Fluorophores:
- Acridine Orange (with RNA): Excitation peak ~460 nm.
- Auramine O: Used for staining acid-fast bacteria (e.g., Tuberculosis).
- EGFP / GFP: (Excitation shoulder) - While 488 nm is ideal, 460 nm can excite Green Fluorescent Protein, often used in dual-band setups.
- Lucifer Yellow: Broad excitation range covers 460 nm.
Recommended Light Sources
- High-Power Blue LED (460 nm or 465 nm)
- Diode Laser (450 nm / 460 nm / 465 nm)
- Mercury (Hg) or Xenon (Xe) Arc Lamp
- Lumencor / CoolLED Engines

BP460-20 Bandpass Filter - Machine Vision & Industrial Inspection - Wafer Inspection
Wafer Inspection
460 nm light scatters more on small defects (particles, scratches) than longer wavelengths, making this filter useful for detecting micro-defects on silicon wafers.
Recommended Light Sources
- For Wafer Inspection targeting micro-defects via scattering, the recommended light source is a High-Intensity Blue LED (peak ~460–465 nm) configured for Darkfield Illumination.
Fequently Asked Questions
Different Types of Filter Mountings
Unmounted:
- a bare glass optical filter
Mounted:
- Smooth Mount for protection of the optics. No thread is there on the mount.
Metric Mount:
- Start with M as prefix, usually seens as M25.5x0.5mm. Mostly used as camera filters
Imperial Mount:
- Start with SM as prefix, usually seen SM1, SM05 etc... Mostly used in Optical system. (You will have a SM external thread to connecting to other objects)
C-Mount:
- Very frequently used mounting. C-Mount is 1‘’-32TPI. And it is not the same thing as SM1, or M25.5x0.5mm.
What are the Thickness of the Optical Filters?
For Unmounted Optics:
- 0.5mm
- 1.1mm
- 2.0mm
*Most of our optics are coming with 1.1mm and 2.0mm
With Standard Mounting (Mounted, No Thread):
- 3.5mm (Default)
- 6mm (Upon Request)
