  • BP460-36 Bandpass Filter - Fluorescence Excitation

    Fluorescence Excitation (Primary Application)

    • Role: This filter acts as an Excitation Filter. It cleans up the light source, allowing only pure blue light to hit the sample while blocking UV and Green/Red light that would interfere with the signal.
    • Target Fluorophores: Ideally suited for exciting green-emitting fluorophores such as:GFP (Green Fluorescent Protein)FITC (Fluorescein isothiocyanate)Auramine O (used in tuberculosis testing)Acridine Orange
    • The 460 nm center with a 36 nm width perfectly covers the excitation peak of these dyes (usually around 470–490 nm, but 460 nm is very common).

    Recommended Light Sources

To use this filter effectively, you should pair it with a light source that is rich in the 440–480 nm range.

    • High-Power Blue LEDs (Recommended):
    1. Wavelength: Look for LEDs with a peak wavelength of 450 nm, 455 nm, or 460 nm.
    2. Why: LEDs are efficient and cool. The filter will "clean up" the LED spectral tail, ensuring no stray green or red light is emitted.
    • Mercury (Hg) Arc Lamps: Mercury lamps have strong spectral lines in the UV and Blue. This filter would isolate the blue emission lines for high-intensity excitation.
    • Xenon Arc Lamps: Xenon provides a continuous broad spectrum (white light). The BP460-36 filter will carve out a precise blue band from this broadband source.
    • Blue Lasers (450 nm / 460 nm): Used for laser-induced fluorescence. The filter helps remove "pump noise" or spontaneous emission outside the laser line.
  • BP460-36 Bandpass Filter - Blue Light Therapy / Dental Curing

BP460-36 Bandpass Filter - Blue Light Therapy / Dental Curing

Blue Light Therapy / Dental Curing

    • Precise filtering for photo-polymerization (curing) of dental composites which often use camphorquinone (peaks ~468 nm).

    Recommended Light Sources

    • High-Power Blue LEDs (Primary Recommendation)
    1. Wavelength: Look for LEDs with a peak output at 460 nm or 465 nm.
    2. Why they are ideal:Spectral Match: The emission of these LEDs falls almost entirely within the BP460-36 filter's passband, ensuring maximum energy transfer to the Camphorquinone initiator.Efficiency: They run cool and require less filtering than older lamps, but the BP460-36 filter is still useful here to "clean up" the spectrum—ensuring no stray UV or heat reaches the tooth pulp or patient's tissue.
    • Quartz-Tungsten-Halogen (QTH) Lamps
    1. Wavelength: Broadband (White Light).
    2. Why they are used: These were the historical standard before LEDs. They produce a wide spectrum of light.
    3. Role of the Filter: In this setup, the BP460-36 is critical. The halogen lamp emits massive amounts of Infrared (heat) and unnecessary visible light. The filter blocks the heat (protecting the tooth pulp) and isolates only the blue 442–478 nm band needed for polymerization.
    • Plasma Arc (PAC) / Xenon Lamps
    1. Wavelength: High-intensity Broadband.
    2. Why they are used: Known for very rapid curing times due to high intensity.
    3. Role of the Filter: Similar to QTH, the filter is required to carve out the specific blue photo-curing band from the high-intensity white light, preventing UV damage and excessive heating.

Fequently Asked Questions

Different Types of Filter Mountings

Unmounted:

  • a bare glass optical filter

Mounted:

  • Smooth Mount for protection of the optics. No thread is there on the mount.

Metric Mount:

  • Start with M as prefix, usually seens as M25.5x0.5mm. Mostly used as camera filters

Imperial Mount:

  • Start with SM as prefix, usually seen SM1, SM05 etc... Mostly used in Optical system. (You will have a SM external thread to connecting to other objects)

C-Mount:

  • Very frequently used mounting. C-Mount is 1‘’-32TPI. And it is not the same thing as SM1, or M25.5x0.5mm.

For Unmounted Optics:

  • 0.5mm
