    BP555-10 Bandpass Filter - Photometry & Radiometry

    Photometry & Radiometry

To mimic the human eye's response when measuring light intensity (luminance/illuminance) with a sensor.

    Recommended Light Sources

To utilize this filter effectively, you need a light source that emits sufficient energy at 555 nm:

    • 555 nm Lasers (DPSS): Unlike common 532 nm lasers, 555 nm Diode-Pumped Solid-State (DPSS) lasers (e.g., from manufacturers like Sanwu or Tinker Lasers) emit specifically at this yellow-green wavelength.
    • Laser Driven Light Sources (LDLS): Advanced sources like the Crytur MonaLIGHT are available specifically in 555 nm configurations for high-brightness scientific illumination.
    • Lime or PC-Green LEDs: Standard "Green" LEDs peak at 525 nm (too short). You should use "Lime" LEDs (e.g., Lumileds Luxeon Lime) or Phosphor-Converted (PC) Green LEDs, which have a broad emission covering the 550–570 nm range.
    • Broadband Sources: A Tungsten-Halogen or Xenon Arc lamp can be used; the BP555-10 filter will carve out the specific 555 nm band from their broad white spectrum.
  • BP555-10 Bandpass Filter - Fluorescence Microscopy

BP555-10 Bandpass Filter - Fluorescence Microscopy

    Fluorescence Microscopy

It serves as an excitation filter for orange/red fluorescent dyes such as Cy3, TRITC, Alexa Fluor 555, and Rhodamine, which typically have absorption peaks near 550–555 nm.

    Recommended Light Sources

    1. 555 nm DPSS Lasers (The Ideal Match)

    • Description: Diode-Pumped Solid-State (DPSS) lasers engineered to emit specifically at 555 nm (often typically yellow/green).
    • Why it works: This is the most efficient source because 100% of the light output matches the filter's peak. Unlike standard 532 nm green lasers (which this filter would block completely), a 555 nm laser passes through with maximum transmission.
    • Use case: Confocal microscopy, flow cytometry, or high-precision fluorescence excitation where signal strength is critical.

    2. Lime or "PC-Green" LEDs (The Modern Standard)

    • Description: Unlike traditional "Green" LEDs (which peak at 525 nm and would be blocked), Lime LEDs (Phosphor-Converted Green) utilize a blue LED pump with a phosphor coating to emit a broad "lime-green" spectrum peaking around 560–570 nm.
    • Why it works: The broad emission tail of a Lime LED overlaps perfectly with the 550–560 nm passband of your filter.
    • Use case: Widefield fluorescence microscopy (e.g., Zeiss Colibri or Lumencor light engines often use this technology).

    3. Laser-Driven Light Sources (LDLS)

    • Description: These sources (like the Energetiq LDLS or Crytur MonaLIGHT) use a laser to create a super-bright plasma.
    • Why it works: They provide an extremely flat, broad spectrum (like a "miniature sun"). While they are not as power-efficient as a single-wavelength laser, their high brightness ensures that the 10 nm slice of light you harvest at 555 nm is very intense.

Fequently Asked Questions

Different Types of Filter Mountings

Unmounted:

  • a bare glass optical filter

Mounted:

  • Smooth Mount for protection of the optics. No thread is there on the mount.

Metric Mount:

  • Start with M as prefix, usually seens as M25.5x0.5mm. Mostly used as camera filters

Imperial Mount:

  • Start with SM as prefix, usually seen SM1, SM05 etc... Mostly used in Optical system. (You will have a SM external thread to connecting to other objects)

C-Mount:

  • Very frequently used mounting. C-Mount is 1‘’-32TPI. And it is not the same thing as SM1, or M25.5x0.5mm.

What are the Thickness of the Optical Filters?

For Unmounted Optics:

  • 0.5mm
  • 1.1mm
