BP586-15 Bandpass Filter - Sodium Line Isolation (Na D-Lines)
Sodium Line Isolation (Na D-Lines)
- The Sodium D-lines are located at 589.0 nm and 589.6 nm.
- Since the filter's passband extends up to ~593.5 nm, it will effectively transmit these Sodium lines while blocking background light. This makes it useful for analyzing sodium vapor or monitoring combustion flames where sodium emission is a marker.
Recommended Light Sources
- Sodium Vapor Lamp (Low Pressure): Emits high-intensity, discrete spectral lines specifically at 589.0 nm and 589.6 nm, which perfectly aligns with the filter's passband; this is the industry-standard source for calibrating sodium detection systems or performing Atomic Absorption Spectroscopy (AAS) to measure sodium concentration.
- Tunable Diode Laser (TDL): Provides an ultra-narrow linewidth light source that can be locked exactly to 589 nm; this allows for high-sensitivity absorption measurements in combustion diagnostics by probing the sodium atoms with greater spectral resolution than a standard lamp.
- Amber LED (Peak ~590 nm): Offers a cost-effective, stable, and long-lifetime source of broadband yellow light (FWHM ~20 nm) that overlaps with the filter's transmission window; ideal for system alignment, backlighting for shadowgraphy in vapor analysis, or general test illumination.

BP586-15 Bandpass Filter - Industrial Imaging & Machine Vision
Industrial Imaging & Machine Vision
- Used to increase contrast in monochromatic imaging systems. A 586 nm filter can make yellow/orange features appear bright white while darkening blue or green features.
Recommended Light Sources
- White LED Ring Light / Bar Light: Provides a broad spectrum of illumination that allows the BP586-15 filter to act as the sole discriminator; this setup simplifies inventory by using standard lighting while effectively darkening blue/green inks or substrates and highlighting yellow/orange markings for high-contrast Optical Character Recognition (OCR).
- High-Intensity Amber LED (~590 nm): Emits light efficiently within the filter's passband range; this maximizes the signal-to-noise ratio by flooding the scene with only the "correct" wavelength, ensuring that blue/green features absorb the light (appearing black) while yellow features reflect it strongly, without wasting energy on wavelengths the camera won't see.
Fequently Asked Questions
Different Types of Filter Mountings
Unmounted:
- a bare glass optical filter
Mounted:
- Smooth Mount for protection of the optics. No thread is there on the mount.
Metric Mount:
- Start with M as prefix, usually seens as M25.5x0.5mm. Mostly used as camera filters
Imperial Mount:
- Start with SM as prefix, usually seen SM1, SM05 etc... Mostly used in Optical system. (You will have a SM external thread to connecting to other objects)
C-Mount:
- Very frequently used mounting. C-Mount is 1‘’-32TPI. And it is not the same thing as SM1, or M25.5x0.5mm.
What are the Thickness of the Optical Filters?
For Unmounted Optics:
- 0.5mm
- 1.1mm
- 2.0mm
*Most of our optics are coming with 1.1mm and 2.0mm
With Standard Mounting (Mounted, No Thread):
- 3.5mm (Default)
- 6mm (Upon Request)
