  • How to read a USAF resolution chart

    • Element Number: This identifies the specific pattern of lines within a group.
    • Group Number: This identifies the group that the element belongs to.

    To read a USAF 1951 target chart, you would start by photographing the chart through the lens that you are testing. Then,you would examine the photograph to see which is the smallest element where the individual lines are still distinguishable. The higher the element number that can be resolved, the higher the resolving power of the lens.

  • How to read a USAF resolution chart

    The table shows the number of lines per millimeter (lp/mm) for each element within a group. 

    Here’s how to use it to determine the resolution of your lens:

    1. Take a picture of the USAF 1951 target chart through the lens you are testing. Make sure the image is in focus and properly lit.
    2. Examine the photograph to find the smallest element where the individual lines are still distinguishable. This is the element that corresponds to the resolving power of your lens.
    3. Locate the group number and element number of the smallest resolved element in the table. The corresponding value in the table is the number of lines per millimeter (lpm) that your lens can resolve.

    For example, if the smallest element you can resolve is element number 3 in group 4, then the table shows that your lens can resolve 11.31 lines per millimeter.
