It avoids interference from humidity (water vapor) which absorbs strongly at other LWIR wavelengths.

Recommended Light Sources

Passive Target Radiation (Blackbody Emission): In this application, there is no external active light source; the target object itself acts as the source by emitting thermal radiation. The advantage is that this passive emission allows for non-contact measurement, while the specific 10 µm wavelength aligns with the peak emission of low-to-medium heat targets (-20°C to 500°C) and avoids signal attenuation from atmospheric humidity.
