This BP900-10 Bandpass Filter is designed to transmit a narrow band around 900 nm while reducing out-of-band light. It is suitable for NIR sensing, machine vision, and laser diode systems systems using NIR LED, VCSEL, or laser diode illumination. It helps isolate the target signal, reduce background light, and improve contrast.

Near-Infrared (NIR) Fluorescence Imaging

This is a technique used in medical and biological research to look deep inside living tissues. When special dyes are injected into tissue and hit with a specific light, they glow (fluoresce) at 900 nm. The theory here is that human tissue is mostly transparent to 900 nm light, and there is almost no natural background glow at this wavelength. The filter's high OD5 rating perfectly blocks the blinding light used to excite the dye, while the 90% transmission ensures the extremely faint 900 nm glow easily reaches the camera sensor for a clear, high-contrast image.

Recommended light source:

  • 808 nm or 850 nm Laser Diode: This provides highly focused, intense energy to make the biological dyes glow. Because its wavelength is far enough away from 900 nm, the filter will easily block this laser from blinding the camera, capturing only the resulting 900 nm glow.
  • Broad-spectrum Xenon or Halogen Lamp (with an excitation filter): These are common, cost-effective light sources in labs that provide a wide range of light. When paired with a secondary filter to block their native 900 nm output, they are great for exciting a wide variety of fluorescent dyes.

This is used in hospitals to help nurses easily locate hidden veins for IV insertion, or in high-security scanners to identify people by their unique vein patterns (which are harder to fake than fingerprints). The theory is that the hemoglobin in our blood naturally absorbs near-infrared light, while the surrounding fat and tissue scatter and reflect it. When illuminated, the veins appear as dark shadows against a glowing background of tissue. The filter is perfectly suited for this because it completely blocks out glaring hospital room lights or daylight (OD5) and only lets the specific 900 nm contrast map through to the camera sensor, creating a highly detailed, interference-free image of the blood vessels beneath the skin.

Recommended light source:

  • 900 nm LED Array: This is the safest and most efficient choice for human contact. It provides a smooth, even wash of specific 900 nm light over the skin without generating uncomfortable heat, ensuring the camera sees a uniform, glare-free glow.
  • Tungsten-Halogen Lamp with a Diffuser: For medical scenarios requiring deeper tissue penetration, this provides a much higher intensity of broad-spectrum infrared light. The diffuser softens it to avoid bright "hot spots" on the skin, and because the camera wears the strict 900 nm filter, the sensor ignores the wasted wavelengths and only builds the image from the deep-penetrating 900 nm light.

What is the difference between unmounted, mounted, and threaded filter options?

For size options, unmounted and mounted filters use different size references.

Unmounted filters
  • Listed size refers to the actual filter size
  • Example: 12.5mm unmounted means the bare filter is 12.5mm in diameter
Mounted filters
  • Listed size usually refers to the outside size of the mount
  • The filter inside is typically smaller than the mount
  • Example: 12.5mm mounted means the mount outside is 12.5mm, while the filter inside is slightly smaller
  • The inside filter is usually about 1–1.5mm smaller than the mounted outer diameter
Mount type
  • Mounted does not automatically mean threaded
  • If only labeled as mounted, it usually means a smooth, non-threaded mount
  • Threaded mounts should specify a thread standard, such as M25.5 × 0.5mm or SM1

How thick is the optical filter?

Filter thickness depends on whether the filter is supplied unmounted or mounted.

Unmounted filters

How is the filter fixed inside the mount?

Can this filter be used at a non-normal angle of incidence?

Yes, but the spectrum may shift when the filter is used away from normal incidence.

Narrow bandpass filters
  • Around 10nm FWHM: small angles such as 0–5° usually have limited effect
  • At 10–15°, wavelength shift may become noticeable
  • Tight spectral systems should check AOI carefully before ordering
Wide bandpass filters
  • Around 50–100nm FWHM: usually more tolerant of angle shift
  • Around 15–20° may still be acceptable in some systems
  • Final suitability depends on the required passband and blocking range
Note
  • Non-normal incidence may also introduce polarization-related effects
  • If your system uses larger AOI, polarized light, or tight wavelength tolerance, please confirm before ordering.

Can you test the filter at different angles of incidence?
