This is used in medical and biological research to see special glowing dyes (often used to highlight blood vessels or specific cells). You shine a light to "excite" the dye, and the dye glows back in near-infrared. The LP740 filter acts as a shield for the camera—it blocks the bright excitation light but lets the faint glowing infrared signal pass through perfectly so you can get a crisp, high-contrast image.

Recommended light source:

  • 660nm to 710nm Red/NIR LEDs: These provide bright, even illumination to make the dyes glow. Because their wavelength is below 725nm, your filter will block 99.999% of this light from hitting the camera sensor, preventing glare.,
  • 680nm Red Lasers: These provide an incredibly intense, highly focused beam of light ideal for high-resolution microscopes. The filter easily blocks the harsh laser light while capturing the glow.

Covert Security and Night Vision

This is used for security cameras, traffic cameras, or wildlife cameras that need to see clearly in the dark without using a visible spotlight. The LP740 filter blocks out messy visible light from the environment (like streetlamps or passing car headlights) so the camera only records the pure infrared image you are illuminating.

Recommended light source:

  • 850nm Infrared (IR) LEDs: These are very common and affordable. The light passes almost perfectly (over 95% transmission) through your filter, providing clear night vision with only a tiny, barely noticeable red glow on the bulb.
  • 940nm Infrared (IR) LEDs: These are completely invisible to the human eye (no red glow at all), making them perfect for hidden cameras. The light still easily passes through your filter's 740-1000nm "window."
