What is a Retroreflector?

A retroreflector is an optical device that reflects light back to its source with minimum scattering, regardless of the angle of incidence. This means that the reflected light has the same direction as the incident light, but with an opposite sign. Retroreflectors are useful for enhancing the visibility and brightness of objects under illumination, as well as for measuring distances and positions with high accuracy.

Major Specifications of Retroreflector

  • Size: The size of a retroreflector determines how much light it can collect and reflect. Larger retroreflectors have higher reflectance and lower divergence, but they also require more space and weight.
  • Shape: The shape of a retroreflector affects its performance and application. There are two main types of retroreflectors: corner reflectors and cat’s eye reflectors. Corner reflectors consist of three mutually perpendicular mirror surfaces that form a corner of a cube.   • Coating: The coating of a retroreflector enhances its performance and protection. Coatings can improve the reflectivity, transmittance, absorption, and scattering of the retroreflector surfaces. They can also prevent corrosion, abrasion, contamination, and degradation of the material.
  • Mounting: The mounting of a retroreflector affects its alignment and stability. Mounting methods can include screws, bolts, clamps, adhesives, magnets, or springs. The mounting should ensure that the retroreflector is securely attached to its base and that it maintains its orientation under various conditions.

Use cases of Retroreflectors

  • Optical measurement: Retroreflectors are used in optical systems that measure distances, positions, velocities, angles, or orientations of objects or events. Examples include laser ranging, satellite tracking, interferometry, spectroscopy, motion control, and surveying.
  • Image enhancement: Retroreflectors are used in digital cameras, movie screens, and chroma key environments to enhance the image quality and brightness. They increase the signal-to-noise ratio and reduce the ambient light interference of the captured or projected images.
